Description
Helleborus niger MT is used in general muscular weakness, which may go on to complete paralysis, accompanied by dropsical effusions. It is used in low states of vitality; for sinking sensation. Mania of a melancholic type. Its rhizome is cathartic, emmenagogue, anthelmentic, used as local anaesthetic, cardiac tonic like digitalis, in apoplexy and skin diseases. In herbal use, it is considered as cardiotonic and stimulant for elderly. A recent study has demonstrated apoptosis-inducing activity (cell suicide mechanism to control cell number and eliminate cells that threaten the animal’s survival) of Helleborus niger in cells of hematological malignancies such as acute myeloid leukemia and acute lymphoblastic leukemia.
